ROTH Planning Meetings
In some situations, young people are at risk of significant harm in extra-familial contexts and relationships. In these circumstances local areas have had to consider how best to coordinate plans that reduce these risks and create safety for a young person. Such considerations are required in situations where the harm in question isn’t attributable to actions/inaction of a young person’s parents/carers.
As part of a Contextual Safeguarding system a local area needs to ensure a welfare-based approach to planning for young people affected by extra-familial harm – including those at risk of significant harm. Scale-Up sites piloted various ways to coordinate plans in cases of extra-familial harm. Some of these approaches aligned to statutory guidance (in place in 2021); other approaches worked beyond statutory guidance. Based on the learning from these pilots we have developed resources for those who play a role in designing, chairing, or participating in safeguarding planning. Collectively, they outline steps to take when developing plans for young people affected by extra-familial harm and matters to consider during and after planning meetings.
How should planning meetings for risk outside the home function? What are some of the key factors for successful alternative planning meetings? These resources provide guidance for those looking to pilot alternative planning meetings and develop risk outside the home processes for young people
