Use our online context weighting tool to help visualise which contexts play a bigger role in young people's lives. This can help you to focus discussions around which context should be the focus of a plan or response - rather than just focussing on individual young people.

To use the tool you can increase or decrease the size of each box using the + or - buttons. You can also re-order (using the arrows) or re-name the boxes (using the pencil icon). You can also add two more contexts by using the 'Add' function. Click 'help' for more information. Use the 'screenshot' function to record your image.

Context Weighting

This tool allows you to produce a visual representation of the relative priorities of various contexts (Contextual Weighting) by allowing you to change the size, order, names of and relationships between various contexts.

The tools start with four context boxes of equal size. The icons at the top of each box allow you to perform the following:

+︎ Increase Size
Increases the size of the box. All the other boxes are automatically decreased in size. Above a maximum size the icon is greyed out and no further increases are possible.
−︎ Decrease Size
Decrease the size of the box. All the other boxes are automatically increased in size. Below a minimum size the icon is greyed out and no further decreases are possible.
↖︎ Move left/upwards
Moves the box left or upwards by swapping its position with the one to the left of it. If the box is already at the top left the icon is greyed out.
↘︎ Move right/downwards
Moves the box right or downwards by swapping its position with the one to the right of it. If the box is already at the bottom right the icon is greyed out.
✎︎ Rename context
Allows you to change the name of the context. Edit the text in the box provided and press Return/Enter to save it or ESC to cancel the change.
🔗︎ Link to another context
Allows you to draw a dotted line between two boxes to show a relationship between contexts. Click on the symbol on one box and it will turn blue and the symbols on other boxes (that don't already have a line from this box) will turn green. Click on one of the green symbols to complete the line. Click on the blue symbol again to cancel this operation or press ESC. You can remove a line by clicking on it and clicking on the 'Remove' button. The Remove button will automatically go away after three seconds or you can press ESC to get rid of it.
×︎ Delete the context
Allows you to delete this context (and all lines connected to it). You will be prompted to confirm before the box is deleted.

The buttons at the bottom left of the page perform the following:

Help
Displays this help information.
Reset
Resets the boxes to their default configuration. This will remove all customisations, including lines and additional contexts, resetting the sizes, names and order of the boxes. You will be prompted to confirm before this happens.
Add
Adds a new context. You will need to supply a name in the text box provided and press Return/Enter to save it. A maximum of six boxes are allowed. This button is greyed out if there are already six boxes.
PDF
Creates a PDF file of the current configuration.

The layout of the boxes and lines is saved in local storage in your browser so that the same configuration can be used in future. No other information is collected or stored.
