Contextual Safeguarding Toolkit

For Contextual Safeguarding to be understood and embedded both within Children’s social care and across partner agencies it important that staff are provided with a number of high-quality and evidence-based training options. Training should be appropriate to the audience and contextualised to the local area and practice. Within Hackney, training was been rolled out to a number of different practitioners and organisations at different stages when embedding a Contextual Safeguarding system.

Contextual Safeguarding Training

Areas beginning to develop local approaches to Contextual Safeguarding local authorities or agencies may want to introduce basic Contextual Safeguarding training to their staff. This training should provide staff with an overview of:

  • Theory of Contextual Safeguarding, its origins and development, principally that it has been developed as an approach to extra-familial harm
  • Principles of Contextual Safeguarding including the four domains: Target, Legislative frameworks, Partnerships and Outcomes measurements (video here)
  • System challenges of the current system when responding to extra-familial risk including assessments, thresholds, interventions, policy, legal frameworks and partnerships.
  • Practical implications of how local authorities nationally are developing and using contextual safeguarding, with resources and examples
  • Case study activities and opportunities to discuss local challenges

However, before delivering training on Contextual Safeguarding it is essential that local authorities identify and outline what the strategic commitment is to Contextual Safeguarding and how this will be reflected in the commitment of resources. This is important for ensuring that staff, when being trained on Contextual Safeguarding, understand how it relates to their role and what they are being asked to do.

The Contextual Safeguarding Team at the University of Bedfordshire provide a number of different training options on Contextual Safeguarding. We also provide a five-day train-the-trainer short course where practitioners who attend are accredited as Contextual Safeguarding trainers. Other Contextual Safeguarding Training

In addition to training on Contextual safeguarding itself, training can be provided to practitioners, agencies and partners throughout the process of embedding. This may include training to:

  • Practitioners on new resources, tools, systems and structures as they are developed
  • Partners, for example, transport staff, hotels, taxis, refuge collectors, schools, businesses. In addition to providing training on Contextual Safeguarding and their role within this it may be important to provide basic safeguarding training.
  • Young people and community members as part of interventions following assessment, for example Bystander Training may be provided to students within a school.
  • Community Guardian training for local businesses, residents and community members

Contextual case study exercise for practitioners

When we deliver training with practitioners on contextual safeguarding we use case study exercises to support practitioners to think through putting contextual safeguarding theory into practice.
